Farnworth has produced more Olympic gold medals than Birmingham and Glasgow
FARNWORTH has produced more Olympic gold medals than several major British cities, including Birmingham and Glasgow - all thanks to six-time cycling champion Jason Kenny.
Research from Barratt London reveals which towns and cities across the UK have produced the most gold medallists.
The 33-year-old Farnworth Flyer, Jason Kenny, won three gold medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and three more at the Rio 2016 games.
After winning the gold medal in the final of the men's Keirin, he joined Chris Hoy as the holder of six Olympic gold medals, more than any other Team GB athlete.
His achievements mean that Farnworth comes in fourth place on the list, being beaten only by Cardiff, Edinburgh and Wimbledon.
According to the 2011 Census, Farnworth has a population of less than 27,000 people, while Birmingham has more than 40 times that (1.1 million people).
With six gold medals, Farnworth places higher than the likes of Birmingham and Glasgow - which are both home to five gold medals.
By using data from the likes of Olympedia and Wikipedia, the firm has traced the birthplaces of British athletes to see where in the UK has produced the most stars.
It has split the data by city, region, and sport to celebrate Team GBâs inspiring performances since the games were first introduced in 1896.
