Police officer suspended over Flinders Street Station tackle
A Victoria Police acting sergeant has been suspended after footage emerged on social media last week of an officer grabbing a man from behind and slamming him to the ground at Flinders Street Station.
The footage was filmed at the station on September 22 and has since been shared widely on social media.
A police spokesperson said on Wednesday afternoon that the force was continuing to investigate the incident. An acting sergeant from a âspecialist support unitâ had been suspended as a result of early inquiries, the spokesperson said.
Footage of the incident shows the man who is taken to the ground talking to other officers at the station, appearing to hold a jacket in one arm while the other is by his side.
It is then that another officer comes up behind the man, grabs him, and swings him onto the station floor.
Another officer then bends down to help the officer who took the man to the ground. The sound of the manâs head hitting the floor can be heard in the video.
The incident happened during a day of significant anti-lockdown and anti-vaccination mandate protests in Melbourneâs CBD. Hundreds of protesters occupied the Shrine of Remembrance, where there were violent scenes as police cleared the crowd and arrested more than 200 people.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the Flinders Street Station incident â" particularly whoever took the footage â" to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via its website.
