  • QR code technology will form the backbone of Victoria’s mandatory vaccination scheme for venues opening to increased numbers of patrons once the state reaches its 70 per cent full-dose target about October 26.

Premier Daniel Andrews said further details of the scheme â€" which will require patrons to prove their vaccination status to enter a range of hospitality venues and businesses â€" would be announced in coming weeks after results from regional trials are known.

“It’ll be a technology-based thing where the act of QR coding in will also determine whether you are vaccinated,” Mr Andrews told reporters on Sunday.

“And it’ll be different for different venues, so some venues, for instance, where you have to pre-book, then you’ll be clearly informed â€" and I think most people know anyway â€" that in order to fill that booking, in order to take your seat at the table that you’ve reserved, you will need to go through a check-in process.”

We have been living a long time in the shadow of numbers. Since March last year, though it feels longer, it is numbers that have dominated our days and shaped every aspect of our lives.

Numbers, like never before, have given life its feel. In their lower or higher value they have been like a chart of our emotional ups and downs.

This focus on numbers has of course been necessary. It has prevented untold illness and saved countless lives. We should be thankful for all the work that goes into producing the figures that are helping guide our way through.

When I watch a sporting event, I am struck by how effortless and graceful a true athlete is in pursuit of their goal. In moments of hubris, I imagine that I too, could pirouette on the ice, execute a triple backflip, or shoot a three-pointer. Those who are good at their jobs make what is challenging look easy.

Schools lead from the ground, and this too can look easy. It is not. On the ground, you look into each other’s eyes and see the richness and complexity of people’s lives. You witness how edicts from on high profoundly affect a child, a family, a community. This has especially been the case over the past 18 months.

Current NSW treasurer Dominic Perrottet has confirmed he will run for NSW Liberal Party leadership at a meeting on Tuesday with Sports minister Stuart Ayres to run as his deputy.

Planning minister Rob Stokes declared for the leadership on Saturday he would run for the leadership.

Attorney General Mark Speakman has issued a statement to say he had colleagues encouraging him to nominate for leader but he won’t be nominating for the role.

“I’ve decided that the best interests of the people of NSW are served by ensuring as much continuity and stability as possible when we move into the recovery stage of the state’s biggest crisis since World War II,” Mr Speakman said.

“I’ll therefore not be nominating for the leadership position, but I’ll continue to work hard to support the people of NSW through a strong Coalition Government.”
