It almost feels like Melbourneâs landmarks are in pain during lockdowns.
The MCG wants fans scrambling through its turnstiles. Parks like Edinburgh Gardens want boozy picnics back on their turf. Queen Victoria Market misses the smell of fresh jam doughnuts and Melbourne Museum pines for the sound of kids on excursions to IMAX.

Itâs predicted Victorians will have to wait another month before the stateâs COVID-19 infections start plateauing because of a concerning surge in cases thatâs been blamed on grand final parties, coffee dates and other illegal gatherings.
But even as another daily record of 1488 COVID cases were reported, epidemiologists say that the rising vaccination rates should eventually flatten the third wave, before a larger peak expected later this year after the stateâs reopening begins.

They say the initial flattening could arrive in around four weeks, potentially coinciding with the first significant lifting of restrictions that will see fully vaccinated people in Melbourne allowed to get a haircut and dine and shop outside.

WASHINGTON: Biden administration officials say a new pill that could provide an easier, effective way to treat COVID-19 is good news, while adding vaccination remains the key to controlling the pandemic.
Officials at drugmaker Merck say theyâll soon seek regulatory approval for the experimental pill, which reduced hospitalisations and deaths by half in people recently infected with the coronavirus.
Dr Anthony Fauci calls it âvery good newsâ and Merckâs data on its medicine âimpressiveâ.
White House coronavirus coordinator Jeff Zients says vaccination will remain the governmentâs main strategy for controlling the pandemic.
âWe want to prevent infections, not just wait to treat them when they happen,â Mr Zients said at the briefing on Friday.
If itâs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the government has contracted to buy 1.7 million doses of Merckâs medication.
