  • In what’s been a relatively open and uncontested match, both the Blues and Suns have had their fair share of chances to impose themselves on the scoreboard.

Each team has registed seven marks inside-50 in the first half, showing how open the game is.

The Suns are going at high efficency by foot, but have sprayed 3.8 in front of goal. At the moment it’s anyone’s game.

As Carlton and Gold Coast take a breather at half-time at Marvel Stadium, travel back to 2011 for the Suns’ very first AFL game which was played against the Blues.

The second quarter transpired in very similar fashion to the first.

The Suns came out firing to grab the lead, but were let down by inaccuracy again as the Blues capitalised to put themselves back in front.

The visitors are doing a lot right as they lead the disposals 191-166, contested possessions 63-61, clearances 20-16, tackles 29-27, marks 68-50 and scoring shots 11-10. But they’ve just been letting themselves down with their level of skill execution and forward efficiency.

    Carlton 3.2, 5.5 (35)
    G.Coast 1.4, 3.8 (26)

Carlton: Honey 2, C.Curnow, Betts, Silvagni

Terrible luck for Ellis who has re-injured his hamstring after only just returning from a hamstring injury today. He has been subbed out and replaced in the Suns’ line-up by Bowes.

Meanwhile, adding insult to injury for Gold Coast, the Blues re-take the lead thanks to consecutive goals from Betts and Silvagni, 5.4.34 to 3.7.25.

The Suns are back in front nearing the halfway mark of the second term, 3.7.25 to 3.4.22.

They’ve kicked the first two goals of the second quarter, both from stoppages, via Miller and Townsend who is playing his first game for the Suns today.

Gold Coast came out of the blocks strong, keeping Carlton scoreless for the first half of the first quarter.

But the Blues dusted off the cobwebs and were able to reel the Suns back in, kicking the last three goals, including a beautiful pair of long-range set shots from Honey, to lead by 10 points at quarter-time.

The visitors have had plenty of the ball, leading the disposals 109-80 and marks 40-25 but haven’t been able to translate that onto the scoreboard.

And despite also being on top in tackles 14-7, contested possessions 33-28 and clearances 11-10, the Suns are trailing the inside 50s 13-14.

    Carlton 3.2 (20)
    G.Coast 1.4 (10)

    GOALS
    Carlton: Honey 2, C.Curnow
    G.Coast: Ellis

    DISPOSALS
    Carlton: Kennedy 8, Newman 7
    G.Coast: Anderson 10, Ainsworth 9, Ellis 7, Fiorini 7, Lukosius 7, Sexton 7

    INTERCEPTS
    Carlton: Weitering 4, Newman 2
    G.Coast: Collins 2, MacPherson 2, Sexton 2

Carlton respond and make the Suns pay for their inaccuracy in front of goal.

Back-to-back goals from Charlie Curnow and Honey put the Blues in front for the first time after 21 minutes, 2.1.13 to 1.3.9.

Well, well. The Suns have started this game very brightly. After 13 minutes they have the only goal of the game, via the returning Ellis, to lead by seven points, 1.1.7 to 0.0.0.

Gold Coast are already dominating disposals 57-30. It’s not a great omen for the Blues who have eight players that are yet to touch the ball.

De Koning and Smith have started in the ruck against each other. Curiously, Walsh is starting in the back half for Carlton. Dow, Kennedy and Cripps have instead started in the middle.

Collins has the big job on McKay, Jones has lined up on King, Ballard is shadowing Charlie Curnow and Weitering is manning Corbett.

Jack Martin prepares to take on his old side for the second time. He’s still searching for his first goal against the Suns.
